Measurements
Wednesday 27th February 2019

We have been practicing our measuring in Maths this week! We also discovered that everybody in the class has the same length nose (including Miss Lowry and Miss Watson)! We all have a 4cm long nose. As well as this, we found out that some people have one thumb longer than the other!

Human Bar Charts
Friday 8th February 2019

Today in Maths, we made a very fidgety bar chart!

Smarties and Statistics
Thursday 7th February 2019

Today we had a very exciting Maths lesson! We were all given a packet of Smarties to organise into colours. We then used this information to create a bar chart- who knew bar charts could be so exciting?!

Viking Heads
Thursday 7th February 2019

Over the past few weeks, we have been thinking about what we think a Viking would look like. Today, we have made 3D models out of clay! It got messy at times (apologies to parents who had to do an early clothes wash this week!) but they look fantastic! Next week, we will be painting them.

Money, Money, Money
Friday 1st February 2019

In Year 3, we have been learning about money this week. To finish off the week, we did a weekly shop! Other than the fact some of us bought 7 tooth brushes(!), it was a successful shopping trip.

Topic Launch Day
Tuesday 8th January 2019

I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas holiday. Year 3 and 4 seem to have turned into Vikings over the holidays! 3SL have enjoyed lots of Viking related activities today which has made us all super excited to learn even more about how the Vikings lived.

We made Thor hammer pendants, acted out a Viking battle, built a long ship and learnt lots of  interesting facts about the Vikings.

Christmas dinner
Tuesday 18th December 2018

There were lots of happy and content faces at dinner time today. What a yummy Christmas dinner!

Christmas in 3SL
Friday 7th December 2018

Christmas has arrived! It looks like Elfis the elf has been busy decorating 3SL last night… it is not the only thing he has been up to though!

So far, Elfis has drawn a huge mustache on Queen Victoria. He must have been up to more mischief last night because Spiderman caught him in his web!

Stay and Learn
Thursday 29th November 2018

Written by IH and ET.

A massive thank you to every one that was able to make it to our stay and learn. It was great to see so many of you in the class room with us! For those of you that weren’t able to make it this time, I hope that this post gives you an insight into what we got up to!

Mindfulness Day
Thursday 22nd November 2018

On Thursday, 3SL learnt all about the importance of mindfulness. In the classroom, we looked at seven aspects of becoming mindful:

  1. Letting go
  2. Patience
  3. Kindness
  4. Trust
  5. Curiosity
  6. Non-judging
  7. Acceptance

We discussed how some of these are very hard to do but with lots of practice we can all become better at them. Some of the activities we took part in are photographed below.

Yoga

Flower Petals
(Kindness exercise)

Each child was given a set of petals and were asked to hand them out to the other children on their table to write a kind comment about them. Children also had to write a kind comment about themselves. They were then given back their set of petals to read all the kind things that had been said about them.

Tree Planting

Which material makes the best glue?

Oh no! School has a glue stick shortage! Good job Year 2 were on hand to investigate which materials could be used instead! The children tested the following materials:

  • wax
  • blue tac
  • talc and water
  • washing up liquid
  • wax and water
  • flour and water
  • paint

Summer 1 – Newsletter

Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed your Easter celebrations and are refreshed and ready for another term of learning. Below you can find out what Year 2 will be learning about this half term:

Topic: The school topic for this half term is entitled “The Lightbulb Moment”, with KS1 focussing on “Cars”. Our topic lessons will be split between History and DT.  In History, the children will be learning about the lives of Henry Ford, John Boyd Dunlop and Karl Benz and their significance. They will have the opportunity to design, build and evaluate their own moving vehicle. Thank you very much for all the boxes and bottles that have been brought in already.

Literacy: This half term in Literacy, we will be focussing on writing to inform and entertain. All of our learning will be based on our non-fiction book “Cars”. The children will build upon their writing skills to write a non-chronological report and an invention story.

Maths: In Maths this half term we will start by revisiting number and place value, before learning about capacity and position and direction. We will be continuing to practice times tables weekly, with stamps available for those who improve on their highest score. Just a reminder that every child has their own log in to Times Tables Rockstars, which can be used to help practise those tricky times tables. “Hit the Button” (https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button ) is an online game used regularly in class that the children love to play. It not only helps with times tables, but also number bonds, and it is important that the children can instantly recall these facts.

Science: Our topic for this half term is “Everyday Materials”.  The children will be investigating the suitability of everyday materials for different tasks.

PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Tennis. Both class will have their PE day on a MONDAY. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit (white polo shirt or tshirt, black or blue shorts and pumps) in school every week. We ask that children do not wear jewellery (earrings/watches) so if your child needs assistance, please remove these before school. We will hopefully be outside for the majority of lessons so please provide suitable clothing.

Other key messages:

  • Children will need to bring their book bags each day, containing their planner, reading book and water bottle. Please ensure that these, along with all of your child’s other belongings, are clearly labelled so that they can be easily returned if mislaid.
  •   ‘Reading Champions’ will be continuing in school this term. Well done to those children who have been a reading champion so far, but we would love to see even more of you standing up in assembly every week!  We have also been running a competition in each class to encourage more children to read: if every member of the class reads at least once each week, there will be a short party during Golden Time on Friday afternoon. We’re really hoping that this term we will be able to have a party!
  • Newsletters and learning updates can be found on the class blogs. Please take the time to have a look and comment!
  • Homework will continue to be set weekly, comprising of one Literacy task and one Maths task. Homework will be set on a Wednesday and will need to be returned by the following Monday.
  • Please see the PSHCE letter about our topic for this term. Any queries about this please see Mrs Oldroys, Mrs Allanson or Mr Cairns.

We are very excited about all the fantastic learning we have planned in Year Two. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask!

Many thanks,

Miss Cowley, Miss Wilkinson, Mrs Thackray, Mrs Powell and Miss Watson

Hedgehog Houses

2AC had great fun in the woods today building Hedgehog Houses! This practical experience is the first building block for their Big Write this week: writing a set of instructions to build a Hedgehog House. The children were really good at giving and following instructions, so I can’t wait to read their Big Writes at the end of this week!

The Day of the Barrage Balloon

In Literacy we have been reading the book “Roger’s War”, in which Roger spots an escaped barrage balloon! All of Year 2 came together to act out the day the balloon escaped, right from Roger first spotting a “big shape in the sky that looked like a flying elephant or a whale”, to the moment he struggled to try the steel cable between two sturdy elm trees in a figure of 8. It was amazing to see everyone really getting into it and pulling the most amazing facial expressions to show exactly how they were feeling!

Germs!

In PSHCE this afternoon the children were learning about the importance of hygiene and how germs can be shared if we don’t wash our hands properly. Using glitter for germs worked perfectly as every time the children shook hands, the glitter passed between them, showing how easily “germs” can be spread.

DSCN2792 DSCN2793 DSCN2794 DSCN2795

Skipping

Year 2 were fortunate to participate in a skipping workshop this morning. The children learnt how to speed bounce, double bounce, side swing and keep the pot boiling. Later on in the year there will be a Trust skipping competition at Brigshaw so get practising!

What do plants need in order to grow?

Our topic in Science this half term is “Helping plants grow well”. Year 2 decided to conduct an experiment to see what plants need in order to grow. After planting each plant, they were all placed in different locations, depending on the conditions.

  1. Classroom windowsill, regularly watered (water, light and warmth).
  2. Classroom windowsill, no water (light and warmth).
  3. Outside the main building, regularly watered (light and water).
  4. In a dark cupboard in the classroom, regularly watered (water and warmth).

Spring 1 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back, I hope you enjoyed the Christmas break.

What’s coming up this term?

Literacy – This half term we will be focusing on our narrative ‘Class Three All at Sea’ and our non-narrative writing non-chronological reports. We will be reading ‘Class Three All at Sea’ and focusing on the theme ‘Defeating the Enemy’, then we will write a non-chronological report based on pirates! Finally, we will spend time on seaside poetry, which will help to develop speaking and listening skills.

Numeracy – Over the Spring 1 half term we will be covering time, place value, addition and subtraction and measurement. Our time work will involve telling the time to the hour and half past the hour. We will also be looking at recognising and using language relating to dates including days of the week, weeks, months and years. In addition to this, the children will be measuring and recording time whilst solving practical problems. During our place value and number work we will be revisiting numbers to 20 then exploring numbers to 40. Finally, the children will be exploring length and height and will begin to use measuring equipment and record information.

Mathsletics is a fantastic website were the children can practice all these skills, please ask if you are not sure of your child’s log on details.

Science – Our science unit over this half term is Animals including Humans. The children will learn to identify and classify animals including humans. They will be looking at carnivores, herbivores and omnivores as well as main animal groups such as amphibians and mammals. In addition to this, the children will be performing simple tests and using the information to answer simple questions.

RE –  What does it mean to be part of a church or a mosque?

PE– Coach Clayton.  PE will be on a Thursday, please provide a fully named indoor and outdoor PE kit. We would also ask that children with pierced ears come to school with them taken out.

Topic- The whole school topic is ‘River Deep, Mountain High’. This will have a focus on Geography, looking at the world’s Oceans. The children will name and locate the world’s five oceans, use compass directions, use globes and aerial photographs to identify continent locations and use atlases and globes to identify oceans.

Art- Our Art focus this term is ‘Painting’. The children will be exploring the work of Klee, Klimt and Hockney. We will be mixing colours, exploring how to make our colours lighter and darker and use the paint to develop ideas, experiences and imagination. The children will be using a variety of tools and brush sizes to paint on different surfaces, recording their work in a sketch book.

Phonics- Phonics is a very important part of Year 1 as the children will complete a phonics screening (or phonics challenge as we say to the children) at the start of June. If you have any questions or concerns about the screening please do not hesitate to ask. The www.phonicsplay.co.uk  website is an excellent fun revision tool children can use.

Reading- Please could you bring the reading books, planners and book bags to school every day. We will read with each child at least once a week and the children will change their books, this may not be on the same day every week. We also listen to the children read during guided reading sessions.

Homework- Homework will be given out every Wednesday and should be returned on a Monday.

Computing- There are many popular websites available:

www.mathszone.co.uk  www.phonicsplay.co.uk  www.bbcbitesize.co.uk

During computing sessions we discuss internet safety, teaching the children how to keep themselves safe on the internet, not to divulge personal information and where to go to for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies. We ask that you continue this at home. This half term we will be learning about the internet and programmes such as SMART notebook. At the end of the topic the children will be using the internet and SMART to create a fact file about pirates.

Reminders-

Please can all the children’s belongings be named, including pumps.

Please remember earrings should be gold or silver studs.

Please ensure water bottles only contain water, as juice attracts ants.

We are available to speak to in the mornings and at the end of the day if you have any concerns or worries.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Our New Science Topic – Animals including Humans

03.01.17 What a fantastic first day back! We started our new science topic this afternoon called ‘Animals including Humans’. We had great fun drawing around our bodies and labeling our body parts.

Topic- The whole school topic is ‘A Step Back In Time’. This will have a focus on History, looking at timelines and key events within living memory. Our final timeline that we will create will be of Queen Victoria, looking at the key events in her life.

DT- Our Design and Technology focus this term is ‘Christmas Themed Food’. The children will be exploring how to eat healthy, where food comes from and how certain foods are made. At the end of the topic the children will be cooking and trying some Christmas themed food!

Computing- There are many popular websites available: www.mathszone.co.uk www.phonicsplay.co.uk  www.bbcbitesize.co.uk

During computing sessions we discuss internet safety, teaching the children how to keep themselves safe on the internet, not to divulge personal information and where to go to for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies. We ask that you continue this at home. This half term we will be learning about algorithms, what they are and how they are implemented as programs on digital devices.

Reminders-

Please can all the children’s belongings be named, including pumps.

Please remember earrings should be gold or silver studs.

Please ensure water bottles only contain water, as juice attracts ants.

We are available to speak to in the mornings and at the end of the day if you have any concerns or worries.

Don’t forget to look at our BLOG to see what we have been doing.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Miss Harrison and Mrs Powell.

Maths Challenge

03.11.16 In maths today we have been learning about how to identify and represent number. Some of the children had a tricky maths challenge to work out, see if you can work it out too.

There are three buckets, a red, a blue and a purple one.
20 balls are shared between the three buckets.
There are 3 more balls in the red than the blue.
There is one less in the purple than the red.
All the buckets have more than 4 balls in them.
How many balls are in each bucket?

Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back after our Christmas break. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! Topic– This half term our topic is ‘All Around the World. We will be learning about different places around the world, who lives there and how they live. If anyone creates any pieces of work or has any photos relating to this topic at home, we would greatly appreciate it if they could be brought in and shared with the class. Mathematics– In maths we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We will be learning to recognise them and describe their properties. When you are out with your child why not play a shape spotting game and tell us how many different shapes you can find? Phonics– Phonics takes place every morning with your child. We will continue to introduce the Children to the sounds and use these to segment and blend words. All of these skills help them in their reading and writing. If you want to continue this learning at home www.phonicsplay.co.uk is an excellent website for fun games. Please ask us which phase your child is using. Key Words – We will continue to send home children’s high frequency words, ‘Key Words’ that they need to learn in reception.  The children need to know these words off by heart as they are tricky to sound out. Learning these words will increase their fluency and make reading more enjoyable. Reading- We will still be changing reading books on a Monday and Friday. It is important that your child brings their planner and reading book into school every-day. When reading with your child we play simple games with them to develop their skills. Some of the games we play are; find the word, guess the ending and what’s happening. If you need any ideas please look on page 97 in their planners. We respectfully ask that water bottles are not carried in book bags as we have had a few books damaged from leaking water bottles. Don’t forget children who read five times a week at home get entered into the special reading draw each Monday. Planners– Please will you record in their planner when you read with your child at home to let us know how they have done with their reading; this is very positive for your child as we can work on things they have struggled with at home or we can celebrate the extra learning they do. P.E– We are very lucky to be starting our P.E lessons with Coach Clayton this half term. They will be every Monday morning and the children will need their P.E kit at school. Each week the children will need: dark coloured shorts, a white t-shirt and pumps. If you know your child struggles to dress and undress themselves please could you encourage them to practice this at home. All earrings should be removed before PE. If your child has recently had their ears pierced, please could you provide tape to cover the earrings. Uniform- Please make sure that all items of uniform are labeled clearly in a place your child recognises. As you can appreciate it is very difficult to match the child with their missing belongings if it is not clearly labeled and we appreciate that uniforms cost a lot of money and we want to make sure that they are returned to the rightful owner. Show and Tell- Every Friday we will be having a short show and tell session. The children who are allowed to bring in something to share will be informed on Thursday. This will work on a rota so that every child has a chance to join in. Thank you for your time. If you have any questions please come and speak to us at the beginning or end of the school day.

Welcome back to 2016

We started back this morning with PE with coach Clayton, it was fantastic! We can’t wait for next weeks session. IMG_2963

Christmas 2015

Wow we have been really busy during December! We started December with our nativity, ‘A little Bird told me’, where we all had words to say and sang the songs beautifully. We went to watch, ‘Robin Hood and Babes in the Wood’ at Leeds City Varieties. We had to shout as the villains appeared and ended by dancing in the aisles! Molly arranged a scoot to school week and for those who participated she gave us tinsel and decorations to make our scooters look Christmassy.  We made stars and reindeer food to sell at the Christmas fair and lots of us went to see Santa. Everyone walked to church and listened to the Christmas message and sang our favourite Christmas songs. During poetry assembly we all stood up and recited a Christmas poem to the rest of school. For our Christmas dinner we sat with all the KS1 and F2 children and ate together whilst listening to Christmas songs and we finished December with our class party, playing traditional party games and eating party food. I’m sure you will agree we need a break! Enjoy Christmas and remember your PE Kits for coach Clayton on Monday 4th January. IMG_2940 IMG_2939 IMG_2938

Scoot to school

For the next two weeks we are encouraging children to come to school on their scooters, bikes or walking. Everyday we will keep a tally and at the end of the two weeks the children who cycle, scoot or walk to school will be entered into the prize draw.

Heroes and Superheroes

As part of our topic we arranged for the Police, Ambulance and Fire brigade to come and talk to us. We wrote questions to ask them and had fun trying on their uniforms. Unfortunately the ambulance broke down on the way but we are hoping they can come another time.

A big thank you to all in F2T (and all the other classes) who cycled or scooted to school during The Big Pedal. It motivated me (and my boys) to get our bikes out of the garage, get on them and more importantly leave the car at home!

We loved the early morning fresh air, getting a bit of exercise and a feeling of wellbeing, all before school had even started!

Well done F2T lets keep it going.
