6JA

Welcome…

Thank you for visiting 6JA’s class blog. We are really excited to share all of our learning with you this year. Be sure to visit regularly to find pictures, memories and records of what takes place inside our classroom at Allerton Bywater Primary School.

Any teacher will tell you that marking books is a time-consuming part of the job, but certain books make the hours spent marking completely worthwhile. Well done to Adam, Phoebe H, Robyn, Gift and Cerys for their continued, outstanding presentation of work. Your books are a pleasure to mark!

A huge well done and thank you to the children for a brilliant first 2 days of learning. I am so impressed with how the children are responding to new routines, expectations and not to mention…trickier work! Special shout-out to the ‘Star of the day’ winners so far: Marcus & Phoebe, Max / Campbell & Gift. Keep it up guys 🙂

WELCOME TO 5LM’s BLOG!

Welcome to the relaunch of the school blog. Each week we will update this page to share all of the wonderful work we have been busy doing in school.

Thanks for stopping by to have a look,

Mrs McPhillips and Mrs Owens

Sports Day

Well done to everyone in 5LM for taking part in Sports Day. Everybody  was involved both in competing and cheering on our colour teams. A big ‘Well Done’ to everyone in White team who were the winning team on the day. A big shout out also needs to go to Mr Turner for organising the day and for all of the adults from home who could manage to attend to cheer everyone on too!

Brigshaw Trust Sports Day

Well done to all of the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 for an amazing day at John Charles! We saw some amazing teamwork, cooperation and perseverance through the games and races. I was very impressed to see some children trying out new events such as the high jump and supporting  the relay teams at the end of the day. I’m sure you will be looking forward to seeing the athletes perform in our school sports day later in the term, showing off their sporting skills!

Topic Launch Day

We have some amazing artists in our class! What a spectacular array of artwork they have produced. It was lovely to hear some lovely comments from the staff about the effort the children put in to producing their work and also from the children who were very excited about the different techniques and styles they had learnt about.

5LM NEWSLETTER – SUMMER 2

Dear parents/carers,

I can’t believe that we have got to the last half term of this year. It has flown by and I can’t quite believe that we have only got 7 weeks left before the class will move up to Year 6 for their final year at Allerton Bywater Primary School.

SPLASH, STOMP & SOAR

Our whole-school topic will be ‘Splash, Stomp & Soar’ where we will be learning about animals of the sea, land and skies. In Year 5, our focus is animals of the skies.

English: We will be reading ‘Skellig’ by David Almond. We will be writing to entertain this half term. We will have a unit on narrative where we will write the next chapter that would come at the end of the story. We will also be doing a unit on poetry, writing and performing our own poems based on Skellig.

Geography: We will be looking at grid references and other map reading skills and comparing our local area to an area in South America.

Science: Our topic is ‘Living things and their habitats’ and ‘Animals including humans’. We will be looking at life cycles of different animals, the process of reproduction in animals and plants and the changes in humans as they develop to old age.

Art: We will be focusing on painting this half term. This will be done in the style of three artists that the children will be introduced to on our topic launch day. We will be painting our own creature of the sky.

Maths: This half term will see us complete our unit on angles before moving onto co-ordinates and finishing with comparisons and conversions of mass and length.

P.E.:  Our unit is ‘athletics’ which will see us practice a range of athletic skills to help to prepare us for sports day this term.

R.E.: Our continued focus will be Sikhism.

Computing: We will be using Purple Mash and looking at databases.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Your child requires a pair of black pumps to wear inside school. This reduces the risk of injuries to toes and feet in the classroom and allows them to move from one building to another safely. Please check with your child that they still have a pair of pumps in school and that they still fit and are in good condition.

Our PE sessions will be on Tuesday. We alternate between a morning and afternoon session to allow both Year 5 classes a decent amount of hall time. Your child should come prepared with both an indoor and outdoor PE kit and with a pair of clean trainers to wear.

Homework will be handed out each Wednesday and is then due back no later than Monday. Please check with your child that they have completed ALL homework (Maths, English and spelling) and it is ready to be handed in on time.  Any homework not completed will be done during your child’s own time in school.

Reading Champion stickers will be awarded to any children who have read at home 4 or more times in a week. Please can you help your child by ensuring that you sign their planners to say they have read each evening. Planners are checked each morning and only the signed entries in their planners for the previous day will be counted as one of the four lots required to become a reading champion. Friday morning is when the week’s total is taken and then it starts again for the following week. Thank you to those who have encouraged their children to read a wider variety of books, it has been nice to see so many trying something new!

As always, please do not hesitate contacting me if there are any issues that you wish to discuss. I am usually available before and after school and we can arrange a mutually convenient time to meet if necessary. Any messages written in planners will also be seen as planners are checked each morning, so please feel free to pass on messages via planners too if you are unable to speak to me in person.

Last but not least, thank you very much for your continued support throughout this year. It has been a pleasure to be your child’s teacher and I will miss them all as they move up to Year 6 and I am away on maternity leave. I have promised them that I will come in to see them next year and check on how they are getting on.

Kind regards,

Mrs McPhillips

Parachutes

As part of our Science topic on Forces, Year 5 designed and made parachutes to see if the size of the parachute affected the air resistance. Ask the members of 5LM to tell you what conclusions they came to.

Y5 Trip to Yorkshire Air Museum

Year 5 had a great trip to Elvington to visit the Yorkshire Air museum. We had a guided talk for three activities and found out lots of information. The children were very well behaved especially considering the weather! We didn’t let the rain dampen our enthusiasm though. Here are a few photos of the day…

5LM NEWSLETTER – SUMMER 1

Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely break over the Easter holidays and that the children are all rested in preparation for a busy term. It might be a cliché, but time really is flying by and I can’t believe we have got to the last term of the year. Thank you to all of you who attended the parent’s evenings. If you didn’t manage to make an appointment, please do arrange to come and see me after school to discuss how your child is doing at this point of the year.

KEEP ON MOVING

Our whole-school topic will be ‘Keep On Moving’ where we will be learning about a variety of transport/vehicles. In Year 5, our focus is aviation and planes.

English: We will be reading ‘Who Was Amelia Earhart’ by Kate Boehm Jerome. We will be writing to inform this half term: a biography about Amelia Earhart, an explanation into Amelia’s final flight considering the different theories surrounding her disappearance and finally a report about the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington.

History: We will be looking at the history of aeroplanes and investigating our own questions to present our research.

Science: Our topic is ‘forces’. We will be investigating a variety of forces and how they are part of everyday life.

Art: We will be focusing on textiles this half term, making our own logo for an aeroplane seat cover involving stitching techniques.

Maths: This half term will see us complete our factions, decimals and percentages unit followed by work on angles and shapes.

P.E.:  Our unit is ‘games’ which will see us practice and prepare for the Brigshaw Trust Sports Day later this year and lessons will take place on a Tuesday.

R.E.: Our continued focus will be Sikhism: stories.

Computing: We will be using Purple Mash and looking at a unit on creating a game.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Your child requires a pair of black pumps to wear inside school. Without these your child is at risk of getting hurt by chairs and other children’s feet when they are in the classroom. Please ensure that your child’s pumps still fit (many of them are growing rapidly!) and are in a good condition. We still have a whole term left and all children need indoor pumps until the end of the year.

Planners are checked each morning and only the signed entries in their planners for the previous day will be counted as one of the four lots required to become a reading champion. Friday morning is when the week’s total is taken and then it starts again for the following week. As discussed with some of you during parent’s evening, please encourage our child to read a variety of books, including ones that they are not as interested in, to help prepare them for reading tests where they don’t have a choice of the texts they need to answer questions about.

FIRE BRIGADE VISIT

On Tuesday 26th March, we had some firefighters. from Castleford Fire Station, come in and speak to Year 5 about keeping safe and to explain the dangers of fires.

They showed us how quickly a fire can take hold in a room and spread – it was scary to see a room fully engulfed in flames and smoke in about 3 minutes!

They talked to us about the importance of checking smoke alarms, having a planned escape route in our homes and taking care in cars too. Ask your child what information they can remember and share it as a family.

There were also some fantastic questions that the children posed to our guests. Thank you Year 5 for being great ambassadors for our school!

#ABPSScienceSelfie

Thank you to all of the children (and parents!) who got involved with the science homework that the whole school were set. It was amazing to see some fantastic photos of your brilliant experiments, investigations and activities. Keep your eyes peeled around school for a display of some of the fabulous photos you took.

SCIENCE WEEK 2019

11th – 15th March

This week we have been conducting a variety of experiments.

  • Who has the fastest reactions?
  • How will an M&M react in different water temperatures?
  • Are the oldest pupils in class the tallest?
  • How do Mentos react in different types of fizzy drinks?

We carried out the experiments and then wrote about them in a variety of ways: a traditional write-up, a poster, a presentation and a newspaper report. We used a different mathematical format to show our data: bar graph, tables, scatter graph.

We can’t wait to see all of the #scienceselfie homework from 5LM. What science have you been doing at home?

WORLD BOOK DAY 2019

Take a look at our fantastic costumes. Can you work out which book characters we dressed up as?

YEAR 5 TREE PLANTING

As you are aware, every class in school has been involved with planting trees and plants in our school grounds. We received over 300 trees and of course we were up to the challenge of getting them all planted. Here is Year 5 in action, doing their part…

TUDOR TOPIC LAUNCH DAY

We launched our topic with a full day finding out about different aspects of the Tudors. We learned Tudor sports, acted out Shakespeare’s story of Romeo and Juliet and also found out about the diets of the Tudor people. We had some great outfits for the day. Here are just a few…

STORY IN A BOX

We had Mimika Theatre come in and show us a story, retold through puppetry. We really enjoyed asking about the technical aspects of the show and wanted to create our own stories in a box to be bale to retell our own stories. Here are our boxes:

Welcome to 4VF’s blog! We are really excited to share our learning experiences with you this year. If you would like to leave a comment then please scroll to the end of the blog and fill in the boxes. Thank you!

05.03.2018

What a day!! We have all had an amazing first day at Herd Farm and are really enjoying ourselves. The children have all managed to settle into their rooms, organise their things and attempted to make their beds – it wasn’t easy! In their groups the children have tried 2 activities out of the 4 already, including The Giant Swing, The Crate Stack, Archery and The Assault Course. Some of the children got very muddy on the assault course but it was so much fun!! All the children have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone to try new things and have achieved so much already, we are so proud of all them! They have all eaten some delicious food for lunch and dinner and then ended their first day with a muddy, snowy and wet walk to Emmerdale where we got to see the Dingle house and the Sharma factory! After the walk, all the children were more than ready for bed and after a quick change into their pyjamas they settled down for their first night. We cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings!!

Spring 1 Newsletter

Dear parents/carers,

I hope you have had a lovely, fun-filled Christmas, and a relaxing new year, spent with your wonderful family and friends and are prepared for another fantastic half term in school.

Our whole-school topic this half term will be ‘Chocolate’. In Year 4, the children will be developing their history skills and discovering the historic roots of chocolate through the life of the Aztecs. We will look, in detail, at the life of Aztec people and the role chocolate played in their culture. We will also learn how chocolate was first discovered and used, and how it has been altered and adapted over time to suit the needs and desires of new consumer markets.

Our Design Technology lessons this half term will link directly to our topic of chocolate, specifically focusing on chocolate packaging. Children will learn about different chocolate manufacturers and the ways in which they present their products to sell to their targeted customers. The children will then design, create and evaluate their own chocolate packaging during the lessons in an effort to advertise and sell their chocolate product.

In Computing, pupils will be using our school scheme ‘Purple Mash’ and using the scheme to develop their understanding of online hardware and programmes. This half term they will be using Purple Mash programmes to develop their understanding of writing to a variety of audiences which h will link well with current and future English topics!

Finally, in Science our focus will be ‘States of Matter’ to link with our topic of chocolate. The children will learn about the three states of matter and how to change a material between the three states. This unit will continue to promote the children’s questioning and enquiry into the world around us and allow them to explore science by setting up practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests.

English

In English this half term we will be writing to persuade, focusing on advertisements and posters. Children will learn about the purpose of persuasive texts and use their knowledge from topic lessons to create a piece of writing to encourage customers to buy chocolate products. Children will learn about persuasive language and devices to use in their writing in order to effect the audience and influence them to purchase the product they are advertising.  In year 4 the children will build on their understanding of grammatical features and learn new skills to enhance their writing. We will also continue to practice and develop our joined handwriting in weekly lessons.

Maths

In Maths this half-term, our focus will be on multiplication and division with the children revising and developing both their mental and written skills, allowing them to really master their understanding in these areas. In Year 4 the children will continue to develop their fundamental fluency in each area before being challenged with reasoning and problem solving tasks. The children will also continue to take part in weekly Times Table challenges, as developing their ability to quickly recall times tables facts up to 12 x 12 will be essential as they progress through Year 4.  It would be great if they could practice these at home with you too! Mathletics is also a fantastic resource to use with the children at home and they do enjoy using the website so please encourage them to continue doing this!

PE

Swimming lessons will continue to take place every Monday afternoon at Kippax Sports Centre, commencing on Monday 8th January and will run until Easter 2017. The same equipment and clothing should be provided as before (swimming costume for girls/shorts for boys, a towel and goggles, if required). Our PE day will be Friday morning and ourunit of work this half term will be gymnastics. All children will require a full ABPS PE kit (dark / navy shorts, with a plain white t-shirt). Should your child wish to bring some trainers to wear specifically for PE (as opposed to their normal indoor pumps) then they are more than welcome to do so. For children with longer hair, may I request that it is tied back during PE lessons, and earrings are removed / taped over, purely for health and safety reasons.

General Information

Please be advised that your child will continue to need a pair of plain black pumps to change into when they arrive at school, this is to keep the carpets in our building and classroom as clean as we can, especially as we move into the wetter wintery days.  Children that do not have these are at risk of getting hurt from chairs/other children’s feet when in the classroom and so we would like to thank you in advance for your help with this. If you could also make sure that all items of clothing that your child brings into school are labelled with both their first and last names to reduce the risk of lost items.

If you have any questions, queries or concerns that you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and see us – our door is always open.

Kind regards,

Miss Firth, Mrs White & Mrs Brown

Marvellous Maths 06.11.2017

Today, we decided to take our learning outside of the classroom during maths. We created our own place vlaue grids an became human numbers. We were learning to multiply by 10 and used our understanding to demonstarte the process ourselves!

Stay and Learn

Thank you to all the amazing parents who joined us this morning for a WW2 themed Stay and Learn! The children really enjoyed sharing the hour with you and it was great to see so much activity and enthusism around the room, from parents as well as children! The morse code was a brilliant activity and seemed to really get everyone thinking about methods of communication during the war. We have loved our topic this half term and it’s always great when the children can translate that to you at home but even better when you get some hands on experience to see what the children have been learning!

Lotherton Hall Evacuation Day

What an amazing day! Thank you to all the parents and carers for your amazing efforts in getting the children dressed up, it really helped them, and us, get into character for our evacuation experience! I am sure the children told you lots about our day but here are some of the photographic highlights!

In Year 4, the children will be learning about the Second World War and its impact locally and nationally. They will discover what life was like during the war and will compare the experiences of people living in Leeds and London.

Our Design and Technology lessons this half term will link directly to our topic and will allow the children to learn about rationing and ‘Dig for Victory’. Children will learn about rationing and how it was used during the war. They will also look at rationing recipes and research ‘Dig for Victory’ to design appealing and healthy meal using their rations. Alongside this, children will discover the importance of planting and growing crops to be self-sustainable and have a go themselves!

In Computing, pupils will be leaning how to create and apply algorithms to a range of sprites. Children will also learn to use coding to send information and instructions in order to complete a task on the computer.

Finally, in Science our focus will be ‘Electricity’. This topic is always popular with the children and will give lots of opportunities for practical investigations and experiments. The children will learn about common electrical appliances, construct simple circuit, understand the purpose of switches and identify some common insulators and conductors. This unit will continue to promote the children’s questioning and enquiry into the world around us and allow them to explore science by setting up practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests.

English

In English this half term we will start with our narrative unit which will be taught through the model text ‘The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips’, a narrative which takes place during the war and is sure to engage the children. The text will be used as a stimulus for the children’s own writing and they will draw on the literary features and imagery for inspiration, culminating in the children writing their own setting descriptions of the blitz scenes during the war. Following from this the children will then focus on the non-narrative unit of ‘Diary Writing’ where they will take on the role of Adolphus Tips and create a diary entry from his perspective.

Maths

In Maths this half-term, our focus will be on place value and number; with the children revising and developing both their mental and written skills, allowing them to really master their understanding in these areas.

PE

Swimming lessons will take place every Monday afternoon at Kippax Sports Centre, commencing on Monday 11th September and will run until Easter 2017. The same equipment and clothing should be provided as before (swimming costume for girls/shorts for boys, a towel and goggles, if required). Our PE day will be Friday morning and our first unit will be Basketball.

Please be advised that your child will continue to need a pair of plain black pumps to change into when they arrive at school as they did in Year 3.  Children that do not have these are at risk of getting hurt from chairs/other children’s feet when in the classroom and so we would like to thank you in advance for your help with this. If you could also make sure that all items of clothing that your child brings into school are labelled with both their first and last names to reduce the risk of lost items.

Anglo- Saxon Shield Making

DSCN4828 DSCN4830 DSCN4832 DSCN4833 DSCN4835 DSCN4836

2.11.16 – A step back in time

We all really enjoyed our Topic Launch Day on Wednesday 2nd November. Years 3 and 4 spent the day in Anglo Saxon Britain, taking part in lots of exciting activities with Miss Dobson, Miss Firth and Mr Turner.

We made string models of Anglo Saxon shields and boats, then used the shapes to create repeating patterns. We then used various materials to create Anglo Saxon costumes for five budding fashion models, and discussed what life might have been like for each character.

In the afternoon, we learned a brand new language! The Anglo Saxons had their own runes, and we all had a go at cracking codes written with Anglo Saxon letters. The children enjoyed creating secret messages for each other.

We all enjoyed our day, and are looking forward to learning even more about the Anglo Saxons throughout this half term. We hope your child came home with lots of exciting new facts to share with you!

Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing half term break. It was great to meet lots of you at our first parents evening, and celebrate the progress your child has made since moving up to Year 3. We’re looking forward to another exciting half term, full of rich learning opportunities.

A STEP BACK IN TIME

This half term, we will board our time machine and take a step back in time for our next whole school topic. We’re looking forward to our Launch Day on Wednesday 2nd November, which will see our children immerse themselves in the historical period they’ll be exploring over the coming weeks. This promises to be an exciting day of hands-on learning. In Year 3, we will be travelling back to 450 AD to learn all about the Anglo-Saxons. The children will look at how and why the Anglo Saxons travelled to Britain, what they did for work, how they lived, and how their invasion helped to shape how we live today.

Our Science topic will also allow us to look to the past, as we explore the properties of rocks. As well as comparing and contrasting types of rock and exploring their uses, we will get the chance to look at fossils and explore how they give us clues about creatures of the distant past.

Our DT topic, which will start in Mid-November, will (quite literally) have a Christmassy flavour. We will be looking at the features of a healthy, balanced diet and using our skills to put together a healthy meal to be enjoyed around Christmas time. We hope you’re looking forward to sampling your child’s creations!

In ICT, the children will get chance to follow and create algorithms (step-by-step instructions for a computer or electronic device). The children will put their skills into action on a variety of super computer programs, and they will also have the opportunity to write their own algorithm to get our Beebots from one place to another.

English

This half term, in English, we are excited to delve into the story of the heroic Beowulf! Rob Lloyd Jones’ fantastic retelling of the classic tale, brought to life by the most wonderful illustrations, will give the children an exciting stimulus to get their teeth into. The children will get the chance to experience some truly fantastic writing and then have a go at creating their own dramatic, action-packed ending for the story. As we move closer to Christmas, the children will explore and create sets of instructions for their Christmassy food technology creations. They will explore the features of a non-fiction text and develop their ability to write for a range of audiences. To end the half term, the children will write and perform their own Christmas poems. This will give the children a great opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills, and I look forward to watching them grow in confidence as they share work that they will undoubtedly be very proud of!

Maths

In Maths this half-term, we will be tackling multiplication and division. We will be using a range of strategies and resources. This topic will, of course, give us lots of opportunities to practice our times tables, and the children would really benefit from your ongoing support at home with this vital skill. This half term, alongside our Reading Champions award, we will be introducing Times Tables champions. If your child does times tables practice with you at home, we would like you to make a note of this in their planner. The children who do this every evening will get a special mention in our whole school assembly.

Mathletics seems to have been a real hit with the children so far and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage them to continue to use this website whenever and wherever possible to improve their Maths skills (all children have their own personal login and password attached in their planner).

PE

This half term, in PE, we will be exploring different styles of Dance, and our PE day is Thursday. The children will therefore need their PE kits every Thursday. Right Choice tickets will be awarded to all children who remember to wear a plain white or blue polo shirt along with shorts/tracksuit of appropriate length. The lessons will take place in the hall, so the children will wear their pumps or other suitable indoor footwear. Just a reminder that children have been asked not to wear jewellery on the day they have PE, and hair of shoulder-length (or longer) will need to be tied back for health and safety reasons.

General information

Please be advised that your child will need a pair of plain black pumps to change into when they arrive at school. Children that do not have these are at risk of getting hurt from chairs/other children’s feet when in the classroom and so we would like to thank you in advance for your help with this.

Kind regards,

Miss Dobson, Mrs Cash-Blackmore and Miss Marchant

25.09.16: Our first 3 weeks in 3ED

Thank you, 3ED, for making our first 3 weeks together so action-packed and exciting! It has been a pleasure getting to know you and finding out what you’ve been up to over Summer.

We’ve been busy, and it has been a delight to see the children trying their best and challenging themselves. We enjoyed our walk around Allerton Bywater on a glorious, sunny Tuesday afternoon – not being from Allerton Bywater myself, I learned an awful lot from the children about this wonderful village and some of its landmarks!

walk2 walk3 walk5 walkcrop

Here is our Class 3ED time capsule! We’ve filled it with our wishes for the year, along with some of our best pieces of work from the first 3 weeks of term. At the end of this week, we’ll put it away, not to be opened until the very last week of Year 3! When we finally open it in July 2017, it will be really exciting for the children to see what they’ve achieved during their time in 3ED, and how far they’ve come.

3ED NEWSLETTER – AUTUMN 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to the start of a new school year and to Year 3! We hope you all had a great summer and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We are all very much looking forward to getting to know you and your child over the course of this academic year. Having met this wonderful group of children at our transition mornings, we’re all very excited about the year to come. We’re hoping your child will really enjoy their time in 3ED, and that you will see their confidence grow throughout the year.

THE PEOPLE AND WORLD AROUND ME

Our first whole-school topic will be ‘The people and world around me’, and will give us lots of fantastic opportunities to learn more about each other and the world around us.

In Geography, the children will be combining their map skills and fieldwork to improve their understanding of the local area in which they live. A walk around Allerton Bywater will challenge the children to observe, measure and record what they see in order to present their findings by devising their own map.

In ICT, the children will get the opportunity to use a range of technologies to bring their local maps to life, and will use the digital pictures taken on our walk to create a fact file all about Allerton Bywater. To round off this exciting topic, the children will be able to demonstrate their programming skills by sending our Beebots on a journey around school.

Our Art lessons will see the children focusing on their drawing techniques with a range of materials while investigating the work of a range of famous artists. The children will also be learning how to create 3D sketches of objects from different perspectives.

Finally, in Science our focus will be ‘habitats’ – this unit is always popular with the children and will continue to promote their enquiry into the world around them. As part of this topic, we will be sharing what we know about various living creatures and exploring why they are suited to their habitats.

English

Our first English unit will be ‘Recount’, during which the children will develop their skills for retelling events; we’re looking forward to finding out what the children have all been up to during the holidays! We will then move onto looking at the family favourite book ‘Paddington’, learning about his adventures and love for marmalade sandwiches while giving the children the chance to read a true English classic. To round off our English, the children will write and perform their own Harvest poems. The children will all be able to showcase their fantastic work in front of the class, and some will even have the chance to read their poem aloud during our visit to the local church.

Please try to listen to your child read as many times a week as you can so that, together, we can develop their reading skills. Your time really does make a difference. Please also make a note in their planners each time they read as all children who read 5 times a week will get a special mention in assembly and our class will have a chance of winning the reading trophy.

Maths

In Maths this half-term our initial focus will be on number and place value; with the children working towards mastery of number, both written and mentally. As well as this, throughout the year, a large focus will be on times tables and our aim is to have all children significantly improve their times tables knowledge. The secret to achieving this is practicing little and often so it would be great if they could practice these at home or on the way to school with you too.

Mathletics seems to have been a real hit with the children so far and I would encourage them to continue to use this website whenever and wherever possible to improve their Maths skills (all children have their own personal login and password attached in their planner).

PE

Our first PE unit for this year will be Multi-skills and our PE day is Thursday.

We are looking forward to meeting you all on the first parent’s evening; however, please do not hesitate to come and see us if you have any questions or concerns – our door is always open.

Here’s to a fantastic year!

Kind regards,

Miss Dobson, Mrs Cash-Blackmore and Miss Marchant

2JA Newsletter – Summer 2 Term

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome back to what is the final half-term of the academic year. It is amazing to reflect on how fast the year has flown by, and I take great pride in the progress and developments made by the children throughout this year. Here is an outline of what we will be learning about, during our final half-term together…

Our Topic is entitled ‘Ready, Steady, Cook!’ During this half term, Year 2 will focus on World War 2, and in particular the struggle for food during this period of history. We will investigate Winston Churchill’s ‘Dig for victory’ campaign, rationing and the basic principles instilled as a nation during World War 2. This history-based unit will see the children compare their modern day diet with that of a typical war-time family. In addition, Year 2 will have the opportunity to prepare various WW2 dishes using ingredients, and the fantastic new kitchen area in school.

In Science, we are going to be focusing on ‘Seasonal changes’ and in particular Summer. This topic will see the children observe changes to their surroundings over a period of time, including daylight, shadow length and weather. We will then compare Summer to the other 3 seasons, in terms of weather patterns as well as the most suitable clothing required for each season.

Literacy-wise, the children will begin with a mini-topic of ‘Euro 2016’. This is to tie in with the European Football Championships that are set to take place throughout the month of June. As a class, we will use football as our stimulus for writing, including for a variety of purposes such as persuasive letters, short stories and match reports.

In Maths this half term, our main areas of focus will be ‘Geometry and Statistics’. After an initial period of number revision, Year 2 will work on interpreting and creating their own tables, pictograms and bar charts. We will also use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement such as a ‘three-quarter turn in a clockwise direction’. For those children who demonstrate a good level of understanding, their knowledge will be deepened through mastery challenges whereby they must use and apply their skills.

Our final PE unit for this year will be Tennis. During this unit, the children will initially work on their racket skills and hand-eye coordination through a series of games and challenges. This will then progress into striking a tennis ball in a given, intended direction. Towards the end of this unit, the children will have the opportunity to experience match-play in order to enhance their tactical thinking skills and ability to outwit an opponent. For children with longer hair, may I request that it is tied back during lessons, and earrings are removed / taped over purely for health and safety reasons. Our PE lessons will continue to take place on a Monday, and so ABPS PE kit is required for all children on this day.

Other key messages…

‘Reading Champions’ is set to continue in school this half term and it would be fantastic if we could have even more champions from 2JA. The regular reading champions in 2JA have made huge progress with their reading this year, both in terms of their fluency and understanding, and so it really does work! In order to become a reading champion, your child must read aloud to a parent 5 times in a week, with evidence of this written in the school planner.

As you are aware, all of Year 2 sat their End of Key Stage 1 SAT’s last half term. I was tremendously proud of all the children, and the level of effort and application they showed was amazing. As yet, the results of these assessments cannot be made official but these will be communicated with parents in due course, with information to follow.

And finally…

With this being the final newsletter of the academic year, I would just like to take the opportunity to thank you as parents. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable year working with your children, and I would like to thank you for the support you have shown both myself, and the school, throughout the year. This was typified by the fantastic ‘stay and learn’ session a few weeks ago. It was brilliant to see so many parents attending the session, with a brilliant ‘buzz’ in the hall and smiles on everybody’s face. Once again – ‘Thank You’

Kind Regards,

Mr Allinson

On Tuesday morning, we had our second ‘Stay and Learn’ session of the year. This time, we ventured into the hall to take part in a multi-skills circuit of physical challenges! The children showed a great level of enthusiasm and effort, as well as their usual high standards of behaviour. It was fantastic to have so many parents taking part, and I know your attendance meant a lot to the children. I hope you, as adults, enjoyed yourselves – and I would like to say on behalf of 2JA and myself a huge ‘thank you’ 🙂

Words cannot describe how proud I am of all the children! Last week Year 2 completed their SATs week, which involved all children taking tests to assess their Reading, Maths and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) skills. I was amazed by the effort put in by the children, and it was clear that every single child gave it their best shot. As a reward for their effort, both 2JA and 2AC were treated to class parties on Friday afternoon. It was brilliant to see the smiles on all of their faces, and just deserts for all of their hard work…

During this afternoon’s Science lesson, pencils were banned from being used!!! The children had to sort materials and objects according to their properties using nothing but discussion. Children were placed into teams, and had to reason, debate and explain their thinking in what was a really engaging lesson. It was fantastic to see the children so deep in discussion, and working collaboratively. Here are some pictures from this afternoon:

To commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday 21st April, 2JA had a very special class assembly. We discussed the Queen, who she is, and the responsibilities of a Monarch. We then attempted to learn the English National Anthem as a way of paying our respects. It was fantastic to see the children singing so passionately, and displaying a patriotic side to their personalities! Take a look at the pictures below…

2JA Newsletter – Summer 1 Term

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome back! I hope you had an enjoyable and fun-filled fortnight with your child, as we enter the summer term of this academic year. Outlined below are the topics we will be learning about during the weeks ahead…

Our Topic is entitled ‘The Light bulb Moment.’ During this half term, Year 2 will focus on Cars. This history-based unit will see the children learn about the history of cars and how they have changed in design over the years. In addition, we will take a look at some of the significant inventors and designers such as Henry Ford and John Dunlop. We will then turn our attention to a mini design technology project, which involves the children completing a full design process to create a car of their own.

In Science, we are going to be focusing on ‘Uses of Everyday Materials’. This topic will see the children develop their understanding of objects around them, as well as the actual material the objects are made from. We will then focus on the suitability of materials in the world around us such as wood, plastic, glass and metal.

Literacy-wise, the children will begin by studying a non-narrative unit of ‘Newspapers’. This unit will be linked to our topic of Cars, and will see the children writing articles based upon facts. We will then move onto a Narrative Unit, whereby the children will study ‘The Sheep-Pig’ by Dick King-Smith.

In Maths this half term, our main areas of focus will be Shape and Time. After an initial period of revision gearing up for the End of KS1 assessments, the children will be looking at the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes. We will then move onto working with Time, and in particular identifying the time to the nearest 5 minute interval.

Our fifth PE unit for this year will be Netball. During this unit, the children will work on their ability to pass, receive and shoot accurately. The children will also have the opportunity to experience small-sided matches in order to enhance their tactical thinking skills and ability to outwit opponents. For children with longer hair, may I ask that it is tied back during lessons, and earrings are removed / taped over purely for health and safety reasons. Our PE lessons will continue to take place on a Monday, and so ABPS PE kit is required for all children on this day.

Other key messages

‘Reading Champions’ is set to continue in school this half term. It would be fantastic if we could have even more champions from 2JA! In order to be in with a chance of winning, your child must read aloud to a parent 5 times in a week, with evidence of this written in the school planner.

The return of homework in 2JA is currently very good. More and more children are completing their Comprehension / Maths homework to a good standard and returning it back to school promptly. As always, if your child is struggling with a given question or section, then they are welcome to leave it and speak to me for help the following day.

And finally, may I just take this opportunity to thank the parents that attended the parent consultation meetings just before we broke up. It was fantastic to discuss your child’s progress and learning alongside you. Thank you for attending! J

Kind Regards,

Mr Allinson

Today was a fantastic day in school – Sport Relief 2016! As a school we managed to raise lots of money towards helping vulnerable people in this country and abroad. All children were invited to dress up as their favourite sports person, and completed various sporting activities during the day. One of the challenges was to cycle, scoot or jog as many laps of the playground as possible in a 15 minute time period. Our winners were Lyla and Jacob – but well done all children who took part. Attached are some images from the day…

On Friday, we travelled to Fairburn Ings as part of our Science topic of ‘Habitats’. Thankfully the weather stayed dry, and the children enjoyed a fantastic day of learning about nature, including sessions on mini beats and plants / animals. We even attempted some pond dipping, with many species such as backswimmers, beetles and water lice being captured and identified! A big thank you to all members of staff for their help on the trip, including the fantastic, enthusiastic leaders from Fairburn Ings. The children definitely enjoyed themselves!

2JA Newsletter – Spring 2 Term

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome back! I hope you had an enjoyable and fun-filled week off with your child, at what is now the half-way point in the academic year. The year is simply flying by at a rapid rate! Outlined below are the topics we will be learning about during the weeks ahead…

Our Topic is entitled ‘The Elements.’ During this half term, Year 2 will focus on Earth. This geography based unit will see the children learn about key physical features of land and sea including beaches, cliffs and coasts. The children will also make comparisons between a coastal resort in the UK, alongside a similar area in a contrasting country. We will then turn our attention to art, where the children will explore mark-making and experiment with colour to create a coastal piece of artwork.

In Science, we are going to be focusing on ‘’Living things and their habitats’. Building on the previous unit of work, this topic will see the children develop their understanding of an animal’s basic needs – this time through the environment that they live in. This unit will allow the children to think about the various habitats, the conditions that they provide, as well as the organisms that occupy them.

Literacy-wise, the children will begin by submitting their own entry into the BBC 500 word story competition. During the first week, the children will have the opportunity to plan, write and edit a short story of their own. They will receive support in class with characterization, as well as developing an interesting story setting for their imagination to run wild with! We will then move onto a Narrative Unit, whereby the children will study ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne.

In Maths this half term, our main area of focus will be Measurement and Money. After an initial consolidation week, the children will be looking at comparing and ordering mass, volume and capacity. We will then move onto working with money, and in particular using different combinations of coins to make a given amount.

Our fourth PE unit for this year will be Gymnastics. During this unit of work, the children will develop their ability to balance, move with coordination and control, as well as perform sequences. The children will also have the opportunity to work with apparatus during this unit. For children with longer hair, may I ask that it is tied back on a Monday purely for health and safety reasons. Our PE lessons will continue to take place on a Monday, and so ABPS PE kit is required for all children on this day.

Other key messages

Mrs Harris will be returning from maternity leave and resuming her role in school. As part of this, she will be supporting with the teaching and learning across year 2.

And finally, may I just take this opportunity to thank the parents that attended the stay and learn session just before we broke up. The children enjoyed a fantastic day of learning all about e-safety, and learnt some very important key messages for when they are using modern technology. Thank you for attending!

Kind Regards,

Mr Allinson

On Wednesday, the children looked at different sentence types during their Literacy lesson. We discussed questions, statements, exclamations and commands, with the children working in pairs to complete their learning activities collaboratively. I have attached some images from the lesson below. By all means, ask your children about the different sentence types!

On Monday 1st February, 8 members of Year 2 represented ABPS at a Multi-skills event. The event was held at Brigshaw High School, and was for all schools across the Brigshaw Trust. Our children performed amazingly well, and managed to secure SECOND place out of 7 teams! The children were a real credit to themselves, both in terms of their behaviour and sporting talent. Well done to each and every child who attended. I have attached two team photos!

This first week back has been quite a tough and demanding week on the children as it has been ‘assessment week’ throughout school. It has been a chance for the children to showcase what they can do and know in Maths, Reading and Writing. I would just like to say how impressed I have been with EVERY CHILD. They have really embraced each challenge with enthusiasm, given it their all, and should be very proud of their results. Well done, and keep up the great work!

2JA Newsletter – Spring 1 Term

Dear Parent / Carer,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and an enjoyable New Year. I look forward to hearing about all of the exciting memories and stories from the children, including how many presents Santa managed to deliver to them! J

Our Topic for this half-term is entitled ‘All around the World.’ During this half term, Year 2 will focus on the Poles. The north and south poles are extreme places to live or visit, and we will learn about how their weather patterns and conditions differ to ours at home in England. The children will also use atlases and aerial maps to identify areas of ocean, sea, vegetation etc and be able to locate hot or cold areas of the world using a globe. Alongside this geography focus, the children will also learn and develop their Collage skills; building a representation of the Poles. I know this will be a very popular and enjoyable unit for the children.

In Science, we are going to be focusing on ‘Animals including Humans’. This unit will allow the children to think about the needs of animals and humans for survival. This is a brilliant unit to study alongside our topic where the children will think about the survival needs of animals and humans that live in the extreme areas of the world.

Literacy-wise, we begin by looking at Non-Chronological Reports. Tying in nicely with our ‘All around the world’ topic, this unit of work will see the children produce a factual report on animals and their environment. It will be interesting to see how the children can communicate information factually and in an engaging style. We will then move onto a Narrative Unit, whereby we will study the Oliver Jeffers story of Lost and Found.

In Maths this half term, our main focus is going to be Fractions. After an initial consolidation week, the children will be looking at recognising and finding fractions, before looking at equivalent fractions such as knowing that one half is the same as two quarters. We will end this half term by looking at Measure – for example choosing an appropriate unit when measuring temperature, length and mass accurately.

Our third PE unit for this year will be Multi skills. During this unit of work, the children will develop their ability to travel using different ways, for a variety of purposes. The children will also be exposed to using various equipment types designed to challenge coordination and multiple skills. For children with longer hair, may I ask that it is tied back on a Monday purely for health and safety reasons. Our PE lessons will take place on a Monday, and so ABPS PE kit will be required for all children on this day.

And finally, may I just take this opportunity to thank you for the many Christmas cards and gifts I was inundated with before the Christmas break. It is always very humbling to receive gifts at what is a stressful time for families, and so all of the gifts were very much appreciated! Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Mr Allinson

Settling in

I have been very impressed the 2JA’s attitude towards their learning so far. The children have returned to school after the 6-week holiday’s eager to impress and trying very hard with their classwork. They are an enthusiastic bunch, and it has been brilliant for me personally to get to know them on an individual basis. A special mention must go to Phoebe, who is the first child in class to receive 10 ‘stars’ for effort during lessons. Well done everybody on a fantastic start to the year! 🙂

Learning walk

Last week, as part of our ‘Me and My World’ topic, 2JA completed a village walk of Allerton Bywater. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and had the opportunity to walk down The Lines and through Millenium Village – witnessing lots of interesting buildings such as Vicars Court, the Church, and even Mining Memorials. The children’s behaviour was excellent on the walk, and I feel the walk was a very worthwhile exercise! 🙂

Halloween Disco

The last day of our first half-term together saw the children dress up as Werewolves, ghosts and zombies for the school Halloween Disco. The children all put lots of effort into their costumes, and looked fantastic (if a little frightening!) as I welcomed them into school…

This week has also been parent consultation evenings. Many thanks for your attendance at these meetings, and it was brilliant to share with you as parents the super start to the year that your child has enjoyed. I am very proud of all the children for their continued effort in class, and wish them a really enjoyable week off!

Autumn 2 newsletter

Welcome back to the second half term of the year! After an exceedingly long first half-term of work, hopefully your child is feeling re-energised and motivated for the busy run up to Christmas. I have been very impressed so far this year with the children’s attitude to learning in class, and they should also be congratulated for the way they have adapted to life in Year 2.

Our Topic for this half-term is Heroes and Superheroes. Initially, the children will focus on themselves and produce a timeline of events for their own lifetime since birth. We will then investigate the lives of other people, including a local resident of Allerton Bywater as well as a more recognised hero such as Winston Churchill. The topic will then take on more of a mini

Design Technology project, whereby the children will have the opportunity to design, plan and make their own superhero mask. As you can imagine, this topic always proves to be immensely popular with the children!

In Science, we are going to be focusing on Everyday Materials. This unit of work will see the children study various types of material such as wood, plastic, glass and metal. We will also identify the suitable uses for each material. The children will finally investigate whether certain materials will float, sink, bend, twist or be stretched through a range of fun experiments.

Literacy-wise, we begin by looking at Robin Hood. Tying in nicely with our heroes and superheroes topic, this unit of work will see the children unpick this story of a UK legend. We will then move onto biography writing, before finishing with a Christmas Poetry unit gearing towards an in-class performance.

In Maths, we will once again be looking at Number. The first few weeks of maths will focus on children developing their knowledge and use of multiplication / division, recognising odd and even numbers, as well as being able to use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve missing number problems.

Our second PE unit for this year will be Ball skills, whereby I will aim to develop the children’s abilities to send, receive, throw and catch a variety of sizes and shaped balls in a different contexts. For children with longer hair, may I ask that it is tied back on a Monday purely for health and safety reasons. Our PE lessons will take place on a Monday, and so ABPS PE kit will be required for all children on this day.

And finally, may I just take this opportunity to thank you for your attendance at the recent parent consultation meetings. First and foremost it was fantastic to meet you all, and was brilliant to discuss your child’s learning successes so far this academic year with you. They are a fantastic bunch of children who I am really enjoying working with. As ever, if you have any questions, queries or concerns about anything in class then please do not hesitate to speak to me. I am always available straight after school for a quick chat, or alternatively you can make an appointment if you wish to do so.

Kind Regards,

Mr Allinson
