Welcome to Summer 2 half term. The children have already participated in a whole Art Day where they investigated the work of Steven Brown. The children really enjoyed the vibrant, colourful and fun style he uses in his artwork – with one of the children describing it as “happiness on paper.” Please look out for the newsletter the children will be bringing home this week as it details further fun learning opportunities for the children many of which include celebrating their skills with other Year 4 children from across the Brigshaw Academy.

What an exciting start to 2019!
We have had a busy start to 2019. We have had our Year 4 residential to Herd Farm, Science Week, World Book Day, Red Nose Day and topic launch days, outdoor learning, to name but a few. Thank you so much for supporting us and sending your children so well prepared for these exciting events. Keep checking this area for further updates of our learning this year. Here are a few photographic examples.
Welcome to 4PD
This week 4PD have been busy exploring! We have shared our learning with our grown ups during Stay and Learn, researched our History topic using genuine primary source Victorian artefacts and used the school’s new Science equipment to learn about electric circuits.

Division – 23.01.18
In Maths we have moved on to division where the children are learning to divide large 2-digit numbers by one digit numbers. We began today by using concrete resources such as deines so the children could see the process before moving on to formal written methods later in the week!
Persuasive Posters 18.01.18
In English we have been focusing on persuasive writing and used the opportunity to link our learning to the whole school topic: CHOCOLATE! The children created some awesome posters with lots of persuasive features including; expanded noun phrases, thoughtful adjectives, rhetorical questions and even some catchy slogans. Well done to Lola who was rewarded with Head Teacher stickers for her effort.
Debate! Fair Trade or No Fair Trade? – 12.01.18
In English, we took our learning to the next level and had a class debate around Fair Trade. One half of the class used their knowledge to create arguments ‘For’ joining Fair Trade while the other had to come up with arguments ‘Against’ Fair Trade. The children did really well to get into character and came up with some very persuasive points. However, we did decide that joining Fair Trade was a good thing!
ABPS News Reporters – 29.11.17
Today we became news reporters for the morning. The children were given some notes about a volcano eruption in Pompeii and had to come up with a news report that told the viewers all about what had happened. The children did really well, especially as they were being filmed! See the finished reports below…
What’s in the news? 20.11.17
Our new focus in English is on Newspapers and by the end of this focus, the children will be writing their very own newspaper articles! We spent today looking at a range of newspapers and the articles that had been written in them by different journalists. We had great fun, searching through to find all the different features.
Gymnastics: balances – 07.11.17
This half term we are doing gymnastics in PE. We have started by looking at different ways to move and exploring a variety of single balances – using a range of body parts. The children came up with lots of good ideas and showed off their skills!
Multiples of 4 – 07.11.17
In Maths, we have been practicing our times-tables and today we moved on to our 4s. Using the large flip chart paper, the children worked in groups to come up with as many different ways to demonstrate counting in their 4s. They supported each other really well and came up with some excellent ideas!
Erupting volcanoes – 30.10.17
Year 3 started the new half-term off with a BANG today as the children made their very own volcanoes. The aim was to get the children engaged and interested in their new topic. Using clay and a plastic bottle, we built our volcanoes before adding vinegar, bicarbonate soda and food colouring to make them erupt. The results were amazing and it’s safe to say the children are now excited to learn lots more about volcanoes!
Dig for Victory – 11.10.17
In D.T. the children have been learning focusing on ‘Dig for Victory’ and learning about how important it was for people to grow their own crops during WWII so today we made our very own WWII soup! The children discussed and gathered ideas for the ingredients that they wanted to include and helped prepare the soup. They also kneaded the dough ready to make some fresh bread!
Plants – 4.10.17
This week in Science the children learnt about water transportation in plants. They did an awesome job of creating a human model whilst explaining how water is transported.
Lotherton Hall – WWII Evacuees! 25.09.17
We had a great time being evacuees for the day at Lotherton Hall. We got to experience what life was like during WWII – learning how to use Morse Code and were trained in using bandages in order to assist the doctors and nurses when the injured soldiers arrived.
Recognising and representing numbers – 19.09.17
The children have been reading, writing and representing numbers up to 1000 in Maths. Today they tested their knowledge by playing a Place Value game against their partner.
Friend or Foe – 11.09.17
We have began reading our new story this week ‘Friend or Foe’ and to hook the children into their learning, we have our very own evacuation. The children did really well to get into character and were taken to the station before fleeing to the countryside!
Welcome to 2AC!
Welcome to 2AC’s blog. We are really excited about sharing our learning with you throughout the year. Please check back regularly for updates in our learning. If you would like to comment on our learning, please scroll to the bottom of the blog and fill in the boxes. Thank you.
Awesome Problem Solving
For the past two weeks in Maths, Year 2 have been solving some really tricky logic problems. However, they’ve all risen to the challenge and both me and Mrs Coote are really impressed with how they have worked systematically and as a team.

Well done to this fabulous pair of mathematicians, who were the first to solve one of the super tricky Number Pentagons!
Bean Update!
After 2 weeks, some of the beans have grown stalks and leaves! Others have still yet to grow a single root (we decided these were probably dead!). Here is a final picture of our beans before they go home. It would be great to see how they continue to grow – do send any pictures in so that we can have a look at them!
Shadows
In Science this afternoon, 2AC were learning how shadows we created. In typical British fashion, the sun decided to disappear behind a cloud for most of the day, meaning that we had to resort to making shadow puppets and using torches instead of going outside to learn about our shadows. The children created puppets out of card, craft sticks and sellotape, before climbing under the tables to try them out!
With the lesson, drawing to a close, the weather decided to change and we were able to get outside for a few minutes of glorious sunshine. The children were set the challenge of trying to lose their shadows (but they weren’t allowed to go in the shade!). The prize for completing the challenge? 200 stamps. Unfortunately, there were no winners….. maybe next time…..!!!!
Bean update!
After spending a very hot weekend in the classroom, some of the beans have started to sprout! Which part of the bean can you see growing?
Growing beans
In Science, we are looking at Seasonal Changes, and one of the objectives is to observe how different plants grow. This week 2AC “planted” broad beans in a plastic cup, using only a paper towel and some water. I wonder what will happen?
Measurement
2AC were faced with lots of measurement challenges this week. They were revising how to measure length and capacity. Challenges involved measuring and comparing the length/width of their feet (some were nearly the same size as Miss Cowley’s!!!), measuring the length of a curvy racetrack with string and measuring how far a toy car would travel down a ramp set at different heights.
Newsletter – Summer 2
Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing half term. This year has flown by and I cannot believe that in 7 weeks we will be breaking up for the summer holidays! Below is an outline of our learning for the final term.
Literacy: All our learning in Literacy this term will be based on the book “Caye Boy” by Jessica Retseck Wigh. We will start by reading the book, before writing a new adventure for Caye Boy to embark on. Following on from this, the children will research the island where Caye Boy lives (Caye Caulker), creating a non-chronological report and developing their skills are writers to inform. Finally the children will produce a holiday brochure for Caye Caulker, with the aim to persuade people to visit. As a Year 2 team, we will be having a huge focus on spelling and presentation of work this half term. Why not ask your child which new words they have learnt to spell at the end of each day?
Maths: Maths this term will be a revision of the topics taught so far in the year, with a particular focus on Data Handling, Shape and Measurement. Tied in with this, the children will continue to practise their times tables. It has been fantastic to see so many children becoming fluent with the multiplication and division facts associated with these.
Science: Our topic for this half term is “Seasonal Changes”. The children will learn about changes across the season, as well as how to observe and describe the weather associated with summer and how day length and shadows vary. Linking in with our Geography work, the children will also identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and in hot and cold areas of the world.
Topic: The school topic for this half term is entitled “Carnival”. In Geography the children will be comparing Allerton Bywater/the UK with Caye Caulker, a Caribbean island. The children will learn to identify geographical similarities and differences, as well as using basic geographical vocabulary to refer to physical (eg: beach, cliff, ocean) and human (eg: village, farm, harbour) features.
In DT, the children will have the opportunity to design, make and evaluate their own Carnival head dress.
The topic will conclude with a whole school “Carnival Day” on Friday 14th July (further details to follow).
PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Netball. Our PE day will continue to be a Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit (white polo shirt or tshirt, black or blue shorts and pumps) in school every week. As we hope the weather will be improving, we will be looking to have more of our PE lessons outside. Please ensure your children therefore have appropriate clothing included in their PE bags (black or blue joggers and a jumper). We ask that children do not wear jewellery (earrings/watches) so if your child needs assistance, please remove these before school. For safety reasons, all long hair must be tied back, so please ensure that any children with long hair come to school with their hair up on a Wednesday.
ICT: In ICT the children will be completing a unit of work called “We are detectives”. They will be learning how to compose and send emails, as well as creating simple databases on Excel to work out who stole a cake from the staff room.
Homework: Homework will continue to be sent home on a Wednesday and will need to be returned by the following Monday. This will consist of one Maths and one Literacy task. Please let me know as soon as possible if you have any issues with this. However should your child wish to spend longer improving their skills (and this is by no means expected!), there are a number of websites which are suitable:
- Mathletics http://uk.mathletics.com/
- Woodlands Junior http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/
- Top Mark Maths http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/counting
- Phonics Play http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/
- BBC Bitesize http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/
Reading: Well done to all the members of 2AC who continue to be a Reading Champion. Reading is not purely an activity to find out happens at the end of a story, or to answer questions about the story later; it also helps improve imagination and spelling recognition. To become a Reading Champion, we ask that children read at home every night and get their planners signed by parents/guardians/older siblings accordingly, even if it is only a couple of pages of their school book. Planners are checked every morning and children who have read and have had their planner signed will receive 10 stamps for every day they do so. As well as reading their school books, myself and Mrs Coote love to hear that children have been reading their own books – do let us know if your child has a particular favourite that we can discuss with them!
Book Bags: Please can you ensure that book bags are brought in every day, containing a planner, reading book and water bottle.
Class Blog: This will be updated regularly to show what we have been getting up to in 2AC, as well as including digital copies of the newsletter. A link to the blog is shown below – why not check out it out and ask your child to explain what we have been learning about?
http://www.allertonbywater.leeds.sch.uk/blog/2ac/
We are very excited about getting stuck into our learning this term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask!
Many thanks,
Miss Cowley and Mrs Coote.
Rights Respecting
In Circle Time, we have been learning about the UNICEF’s Rights of the Child. Why not ask your child if they can remember any of them?
Trip to Temple Newsam
Year 2 had great fun exploring Temple Newsam. Amazing sketches of different artifacts were drawn and clay pots were carefully sculpted.
Repeating patterns
In Maths we have been looking at spotting and creating repeating patterns. Some children chose to use the multi-link cubes to help them. Can you spot which bit of their pattern repeats?
UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools
As a school, we are currently working towards being a Rights Respecting School. In Circle Time this week, 2AC were discussing WANTS and NEEDS. The children were given two packs of picture cards and tasked with finding the matching pairs. Once a matching pair was found, they discussed what they thought the picture showed. It was fantastic to hear the children have detailed conversations as to what they thought each picture meant, as well as whether it was something they truly needed in order to survive and just something they wanted.
Newsletter – Summer 1
Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing Easter break and are not feeling the effects of eating too many Easter Eggs! I can’t quite believe that we’ve reached the Summer term already! Below is an outline of the topics we will be learning about this term.
Literacy: This half term in Literacy, we will focus on three different genres of writing. We will start with Quest Stories: creating characters and following them on a journey of adventure. Following on from this, the children will have the opportunity to complete a “free write”. The children will use their imagination to create their own “creature”, before writing a story about their creature. We will finish the term by writing diary entries from the perspective of Florence Nightingale, who the children will study in their Topic lessons.
Maths: We will start this term by finishing our work on Geometry – revising 2D and 3D shapes before looking at directional and positional language. Once complete, we will be revising all 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as well as revisiting Data Handling (such as tables, tally charts and block graphs).
Science: Our topic for this half term is “Everyday Materials”. The children will learn about John Dunlop and his invention of the tyre, before completing a number of investigations to see which material is most suitable for different tasks.
Topic: The school topic for this half term is entitled “Medicine and Marauders”. In History, we will be learning about Florence Nightingale. The children will have the opportunity to learn about her life and work.
In Art, we will be focussing on Sculpture, in particularly, the use of clay. The children will be designing sculptures in their sketchbooks, before having the opportunity to make these out of clay. Tied in with this unit of work will be a trip to Temple Newsam.
PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Tennis.
ICT: In ICT we will be continued to develop our coding skills, looking at different types of input and different ways of programming characters to perform different actions on screen.

- Phonics Play http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/
- BBC Bitesize http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/
Reading: Well done to all the members of 2AC who continue to be a Reading Champion, despite the recent drop in numbers. Reading is not purely an activity to find out happens at the end of a story, or to answer questions about the story later; it also helps improve imagination and spelling recognition. Just a reminder of our whole class challenge: if the whole class can be Reading Champions in the same week, every child will receive 30 stamps. To become a Reading Champion, we ask that children read at home every night and get their planners signed by parents/guardians/older siblings accordingly, even if it is only a couple of pages of their school book. As well as reading their school books, myself and Mrs Coote love to hear that children have been reading their own books – do let us know if your child has a particular favourite that we can discuss with them!

Many thanks,
Miss Cowley and Mrs Coote.
Easter
As it was the final day of term, and because everyone had been working so hard, 2AC were treated to a special Easter Egg Hunt around the classroom. It didn’t take long for all the chicks/eggs to be found!!!
From everyone in 2AC, I hope you all have a fantastic Easter break, and come back ready to crack on with some more egg-cellent learning!
Red Nose Day 2017
It was great to see everyone dressed up in red for Red Nose Day today! The children learnt about why Red Nose Day is so important for many disadvantaged families, as well as taking part in lots of RND activities, including design your own red nose!
Science Week 2017
This week, every class in school has been taking part in British Science Week 2017. Normal afternoon lessons were scrapped, with exciting science experiments being planned instead.
1. What happens when you add milk to a bottle of Coca Cola?
When posed with this question, a number of predictions were given… “It’ll fizz everywhere!” and “It’ll go really cloudy!” were the most common. None of us expected what actually happened….
So why did the Coke go transparent?! Well, the acid and colouring in the Coke is attracted the milk. The milk then curdles into lumps which are heaver than the other liquids in the drink, causing them to sink to the bottom of the bottle, leaving the lighter, clear liquid floating on top.
2. What happens when you make a ring of Skittles on a plate and then add water?
Why did this happen? The sugar casing (and the colourings in the casing) dissolved into the water. Due to the natural dip in the plate, these colours were drawn into the centre, creating pretty patterns!
Once we had tried the experiment with water, it was asked “What would happen if we tried the same experiment with milk?” So, in true scientist fashion, that’s exactly what we did!
Despite the colours being a lot fainter, the experiment still worked! As pointed out by one of the children, this was probably because the milk “was coloured” whereas the water was clear, so it would take a lot more of the colouring to dissolve into it for the colours to appear! A true scientist in the making! We also noticed that when we picked the plate up to tidy away, the colours were a lot stronger underneath the surface.
3. How do you make a volcano?
It’s easy: use playdough and an empty bottle to form your volcano. Sprinkle in some bicarbonate of soda (and some red food colouring!) and then squirt in some vinegar. Finally, watch as the volcano erupts!
Why does it happen? The bicarb and vinegar react, releasing lots cabon dioxide as bubbles into the liquid. This causes the liquid to “erupt” from the volcano. And the red food colouring? To make it look like lava of course!
4. What happens when you mix cornflour and water?
When mixed together, cornflour and water form a “Non-Newtonian Fluid”. This means that when the mixture is at rest, or is moved slowly, it behaves like a liquid. When agitated/when sudden force is applied, the mixture behaves like a solid. Everyone had great fun rolling the mixture into shapes and then letting it “melt” back into the tray! It is also this principle of Non-Newtonian Fluids that makes it possible to ride a bike/run across the giant pool of custard if you are quick enough!!
5. Is it possible to make ice cream in a classroom?
The answer is yes! Pictures to follow shortly.
Brigshaw Skipping Competition
Well done to all the Year 2 children chosen to represent ABPS at the Skipping Competition on Friday. Everyone tried their best and all the children were a credit to the school. Despite not winning overall, ABPS did win 2 gold and 1 bronze certificate.
World Book Day 2017
It was fantastic to see everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day. All Year 1 and 2 classes spent the morning mixed up, taking part in a variety of different activities. The children had the opportunity to read to their friends, write book reviews and design posters for their favourite books.
2AC have been signed up to the Oxford Owl online resources, where the children can access over 250 ebooks.
Use the website link below and the “Class login” button to sign in and get reading!
Spring 2 Newsletter
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely half term break.
Topic: The school topic for this half term is entitled “Mad Science”. As well as History and DT, our Literacy work will also be linked to this theme.
In History, we will be learning about Rachel Carson, a famous scientist linked with the environment. The children will learn all about Rachel’s work, and how she has influenced environmental science. In DT, the children will have the opportunity to design, make and evaluate a product linked with our topic.
Literacy: This half term in Literacy, we will focus on three different genres of writing. We will be starting the term by looking at George’s Marvellous Medicine. The children will spend 3 weeks picking apart the story and enhancing their use of expanded noun phrases and conjunctions for description, before writing their own Marvellous Medicine story. After this, we will turn our attention to letter writing. We will be focussing on how letters are structured and the use of formal and persuasive language. At the end of the unit the children will write a persuasive letter about the impact of rubbish on the environment. Our final unit of work will be poetry based around the theme of Science.
As part of Literacy in Year 2, we are having a huge push on Spelling – why not ask your child which words they have been practising at school each day?
Maths: In Maths this half term we will be continuing with Fractions, before moving on to learn about 2D/3D shapes and telling the time to 5 minutes. Alongside this, we will be continuing to practise our times tables, with stamps being available as a reward for extra times table practise at home, as well as the opportunity to become a Times Table Champion. If lots of children regularly practise their times tables at home, 2AC could be in with the chance of winning the Times Table Trophy during whole school assembly on a Monday!
Science: Our topic for this half term is “Living Things and Their Habitats”. The children will: explore and compare things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive; identify habitats and how they provide for the basic needs of different animals and plants; identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats; and learn how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, through simple food chains.
PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Athletics. Our PE day will continue to be a Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit (white polo shirt or tshirt, black or blue shorts and pumps) in school every week. We ask that children do not wear jewellery (earrings/watches) so if your child needs assistance, please remove these before school. For safety reasons, all long hair must be tied back, so please ensure that any children with long hair come to school with their hair up on a Wednesday.
ICT: We will begin our learning in ICT by creating a series of instructions to enable a bee bot to navigate around a course. From this, the children will move on to develop their coding skills on the computers, learning about different sorts of data input and how these can be used to move characters around a screen.

- Phonics Play http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/
- BBC Bitesize http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/
Reading: Well done to all the members of 2AC who have already been a Reading Champion! Myself and Mrs Coote have been blown away by the recent increase in Reading Champions – keep it up 2AC! We have also set the children a challenge: if the whole class can be Reading Champions in the same week, every child will receive 30 stamps.

We are very excited about getting stuck into our learning this term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask!
Many thanks,
Miss Cowley and Mrs Coote.
Mathletics
2AC have been reissued their Mathletics log in details. Mathletics is a great way to have fun with Maths, as well as practicing the skills taught at school. Each child will earn points for the activities their play, with certificates on offer when a certain amount of points are collected.
Art
In Art, 2AC have been studying Aboriginal Art and Jackson Pollock. Every child thoroughly enjoyed spending the afternoon learning how to paint in these 2 very different styles.
Year 2 visit the ABPS Art Gallery
An Art Gallery has appeared in the Dinner Hall! Children from across the school chose their favourite pieces of artwork from a gallery in Leeds to bring back to school to create our very own Art Gallery. 2AC loved looking at all the different paintings and discussing which were their favourites and why.
George’s Marvellous Medicine
The children have really enjoyed our new book in Literacy. We have been listening to the Jackanory version online, which has provided lots of laughs!
The importance of exercise
In Science this week 2AC were learning about the importance of exercise. We learnt about how exercise keeps us fit and healthy, as well as making our muscles stronger. We tried out lots of different activities, ranging from running on the spot and doing star jumps, to sit ups and seeing how long we could hold a seated balance against the wall! Our muscles started to hurt after a while (and there were a still a few sore arms and legs the next day!) but we talked about how this is because we haven’t used those muscles for a long time and this is their reaction to working hard and getting stronger!
Mathletics
This week Mathletics was relaunched within school. 2AC spent one of their Maths lessons exploring the “Fractions” section of the website, as this is what we have been focusing on recently. The children were reminded that regular use of the Mathletics site gains them points, and when a certain amount of points have been reached each week, they will receive a certificate.
Bread update!
As promised, here are the results of 2AC’s Bread/Germ experiment….
Everyone was amazed with the results – who knew we had so many germs still on our “clean” hands?!
The Deep!
All of KS1 had great fun exploring The Deep this week. Every child was a credit to school with their impeccable behaviour. Photos to follow!
Fractions
31.01.17 2AC have started a new topic in Maths this week: Fractions. The children have spent the last few days investigating what a whole, a half and a quarter all look like. We have been using the bar method and counters to help us – why not ask if your child can explain this method to you at home?
Colour wheels
30.01.17 2AC got a bit messy in Art today, but it was because we were enjoying our learning in Art! We learnt all about primary colours, and how we could mix different combinations together to make secondary colours! Some fantastic colour wheels were painted – well done 2AC!
Germs!
26.01.17 With so many coughs and colds going around, 2AC learnt all about germs in Science today. The children set up one experiment and carried out another to help with their learning.
Experiment 1: Bread. In this experiment, 3 pieces of bread were placed into sealed plastic bags. Bread 1 was touched by dirty hands, Bread 2 was touched by clean hands, and Bread 3 was touched by hands in plastic gloves, so no germs could be transferred. All 3 slices of bread have been left in the classroom to see what will happen. The children have predicted that Bread 1 will turn green and mouldy due to germs growing on it. Stay tuned for the results!
Experiment 2: Glitterbugs. Every child was given a handful of different coloured glitter to rub onto their hands. They were then asked to go round and shake other people’s hands. All the different colours of glitter mixed together! We talked about how the glitter represented germs and how germs can be spread really easily if we do not wash our hands properly!
How much liquid?
23.01.17 In Maths today 2AC learnt to estimate and measure the amount of liquid in container.
Working hard in 2AC
20.01.17 2AC have been working really hard since coming back from the Christmas holidays. Myself and Mrs Coote have been really impressed with the effort they have all been putting into their learning, especially the presentation of their work. Joined up writing is a tricky skill to master, but we have seen huge improvements from all the children. Keep up the excellent effort 2AC!
All things weather!
19.01.16 2AC spent the afternoon investigation seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK. The children completed a weather wheel to show the weather expected during each season, as well as writing their own weather report for Allerton Bywater. Finally the children tried to match locations to their weather forecast on the laptops.
Reading
16.01.17 In 2AC we LOVE reading, especially in our reading corner! Miss Cowley’s New Year’s Resolution is to read more so why not make it yours too? Remember if you read 5 times a week and get your planner signed you will become a Reading Champion! We have been seeing an increase in the number of Reading Champions lately – maybe if we keep this up we will win the Reading Champion Trophy in assembly?
Topic Launch Day – Oceans/Pirates
05.01.17 Today all of Key Stage 1 dressed up as Pirates to launch our new topic. Great fun was had by all as the children learnt how to make boats, hats and treasure maps, as well as attending Pirate Training Camp to learn essential skills such as how to walk a plank and how to fight like a proper pirate!
Newsletter – Spring 1
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
Literacy: This half term in Literacy, we will focus on three different genres of writing. We will start our learning looking at David Wiesner’s wordless picture book “Flotsam”, with the children continuing to develop their skills as descriptive writers. Following on from this, every child will be given the opportunity to compose their own short story in conjunction with BBC Radio 2’s “500 Words” competition. Our Non-Fiction writing focus this term will be a non-chronological report about Oceans. Towards the end of term, the children will focus on Seaside poems.
Maths: In Maths this half term we will be learning all about Money, Shapes and Fractions, as well as revising our knowledge of the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Science: Our topic for this half term is “Animals including Humans”. The children will learn to identify animals and their offspring, as well as describing the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival. We will also be investigating the importance of exercise, healthy eating and hygiene.
Topic: The school topic for this half term is entitled “River Deep, Mountain High” with Key Stage 1 being given the focus of “Oceans”. We will be having a Topic Launch Day on Thursday 5th January, on which everyone is invited to dress up as pirates and take part in a variety of pirate/ocean themed activities.
Our topic lessons this half term will be split between Geography and Art. In Geography, we will be learning to name and locate the world’s oceans and continents using maps, atlases and globes. The children will learn to use simple compass directions and geographical vocabulary to refer to key features such as sea, ocean and river. We will also be learning about seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK.
In Art, we will be focusing on using painting to develop ideas, experiences and imagination. The children will experiment with lightening and darkening paints without using black or white, as well as beginning to explore the types of marks made with a range of painting techniques eg: layering, mixing media and adding texture. Art produced by Pollock, Riley and Monet will form the basis of out learning, with the children having the opportunity to describe similarities and differences between the artists as well as making links with their own work.
PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Multi Skills.
ICT: We will begin our learning in ICT by investigating if everything on the internet is true, and how this relates to Internet Safety. Following on from this, our ICT lessons will be closely linked in with our Oceans topic, giving the children the chance to explore a range of websites about Ocean life. Through all this the children will develop their skills of creating, organising, storing and retrieving digital content.

Reading: Well done to all the members of 2AC who have already been a Reading Champion! To be in with a chance of winning, we ask that children read at home every night and get their planners signed by parents/guardians/older siblings accordingly, even if it is only a couple of pages of their school book.

We are very excited about getting stuck into our learning this term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask!
Many thanks,
Miss Cowley and Mrs Coote.
Elf on the Shelf
1.12.12 Meet Bernard the Elf. He arrived suddenly this morning, causing quite a stir in 2AC’s classroom. Apparently he is quite a mischievous elf…. I wonder what he will get up to….
Getting ready for Christmas Fair…
30.11.16 2AC spent the afternoon getting ready for the Christmas Fair on Friday. Each child was given a special job to carry out in order for our products to be correctly packaged.
Visit the 2AC classroom on Friday from 3:15pm to buy our festive sweets.
He’s behind you!
29.11.16 This afternoon all of KS1 and F2 travelled into Leeds to see “Sleeping Beauty: The Rock and Roll Pantomime”. A great time was had by all as everyone laughed, danced and sang along. The ice lollies during the interval were a definite highlight as well!
Christmas Baking
28.11.16 In Literacy the children are learning all about instructions, so we decided to link this with our DT Topic of Christmas food and create gingerbread reindeer! A huge thank you to Mrs Coote and Mrs Owens who oversaw all the baking. I’m told the reindeer tasted rather yummy!
Skipping
24.11.16 This morning all Year 2 children took part in a Skipping Workshop. They learnt skills such as “double bounce” and “side to side” skipping, as well as trying out giant rope skipping. It was great to see all the children having fun.
There will be a Year 2 Skipping Festival at Brigshaw School later in the year, so keep practicing!
Children in Need 2016
18.11.16 With it being Children in Need, it was great to see all the children dressed up in their spotty clothes! Today we learnt lots about empathy (how children in need might feel) and what we could do to help. After watching the M&S Christmas advert and learning how it is important to look out for others, the children wrote their own letters to Mrs Claus to ask if all children in need could receive extra special presents this year. I wonder if she will write back…..?
Anti-Bullying Day 2016
17.11.16 Today the children in KS1 were mixed up into groups to learn all about Anti-Bullying. They took part in lots of different activities to learn about how to prevent bullying and how to talk to adults if they think they are being bullied. These included making friendship bracelets, drawing “good friend” hands, acting and a Toothpaste challenge – ask your child about what toothpaste has to do with Anti-bullying!
Remembrance Day 2016
11.11.16
We are historical researchers!
14.11.16 In Topic today, the children of 2AC were set a challenge: find out the answers to a number of questions about Queen Victoria using the laptop and information sheets. They found out information such as when Queen Victoria was born, when she got married and how many children she had (9 if you were wondering!).
One answer we couldn’t find was how long Victoria was queen. I have set the children the challenge of finding out this information on their own and will be rewarding them with stamps if they can tell me the correct answer.
Times tables!
11.11.16 This week I have been really impressed with 2AC and their love of practising their times tables! By the end of Year 2, children are expected to know their 2s, 5s and 10s. To prove they can do this, the children must be able to answer random questions relating to the 2s, 5s and 10s.
The children had the opportunity to practise their times tables in treasure hunt form this afternoon. Check out the photos below to see how they got on.

Well done to our winners who were the first to find all the correct answers! They each received 15 stamps for their great knowledge of the 2s, 5s and 10s.
It has been great to hear about children practising their times tables at home. Here are some examples of super times table practice at home:
Keep up the good work – any evidence of times table practice at home will be reward with stamps!
Properties of objects and materials
10.11.16 In Science today, the children were learning about the different properties objects and materials can have. After discussing what each one meant, the children were given a property and asked to find an object that displayed their property. After a good old hunt around the classroom, all the children succeeded in their challenge.
Why not see if your child can describe the properties of different materials around the house?
Timeline challenge
7.11.16 This afternoon 2AC were set the challenge of creating a timeline showing different events that happened during the Victorian period. Despite being quite tricky, by working well as a group the children managed it! Why not ask your child to see if they can remember any of the important events that happened?
If you go down to the woods today…
4.11.16 As part of our learning in Literacy, the children took a trip to the woods this morning. Whilst down there, they noted down key words to create expanded noun phrases and similes to describe their surroundings. These will be used to add extra detail to their writing when the children complete their Big Write next Friday.
Victorian Day
2.11.16 Both children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the Victorian Topic Launch Day. There were lots of different activities for the children to take part in: Victorian School, playing traditional Victorian games, baking Victoria Sponges, creating Victorian outfits and creating Victorian pictures.
Check out the slideshow below to see what we got up to!
Marvellous Measuring
1.11.16 The children had a really practical lesson in Maths today. Out came the rulers as every child was tasked with measuring different objects from around the classroom.
Victorian Artefacts
31.10.16 2AC spent their History lesson today examining a curious selection of Victorian artefacts. The children discussed what they thought the items might be before they found out what the objects actually are.
Mapping out a story
31.10.16 Today 2AC started looking at their new Narrative in Literacy: Little Red Riding Hood. We discussed the key events that take place in the story, before taking it in turns to draw a map of these events.
Newsletter – Autumn 2
Welcome back – I hope you all had a lovely half term break and are well refreshed for another exciting term of learning!
Literacy: This half term in Literacy we will focus on three different genres of writing: Traditional Tales, Instructions, and Christmas Poetry. We will start by looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Our main focus will be adding exciting descriptions to our writing, in order to create vivid images in the mind of the reader. Following on from this, we will be investigating how to write a set of instructions, linked with Christmas food. Towards the end of the term we will have our Christmas Poetry unit, including a speaking and listening poetry performance.
Maths: In Maths this half term we will start looking at Measurement, in particular the units and equipment used to measure length and mass. After this, we will move on to multiplication and division. We will also spend time focussing on improving our knowledge of times tables. It is really important that the children know at least their 2s, 5s and 10s inside out and back to front, as well as out of order, so every little bit of extra practice helps!
Science: Our topic for this half term is “Everyday Materials”. The children will learn to identify a variety of everyday materials (including wood, metal, plastic, glass etc) as well as looking at their suitability for different tasks. After this, we will be investigating how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
Topic: The school topic is entitled “A Step Back in Time”. Our topic lessons this half term will be split between History and Design and Technology. In History, the children will be learning all about Queen Victoria, including her life and achievements. We will also learnt about timelines through of events that happened during the Victorian period.
In Design and Technology, we will be focussing on where our food comes from, as well as the importance of a healthy and varied diet. Towards the end of the term, the children will learn about Victorian home life at Christmas time. This will be an exciting time as the children will have the opportunity to make their own Victorian Christmas decorations and cards, as well as baking a traditional Victorian fruit pudding.
PE: During our PE sessions we will focus on Gymnastics. Our PE day will now be a Wednesday.
ICT: The children will be learning about algorithms and programming this half term. Using simple directions and codes, the children will direct Bee Bots around various circuits, before using more advanced techniques to program their own digital story on the laptops. Internet Safety will be taught alongside this. As a school we see Internet safety as a big focus, if you have any questions or queries regarding this please do not hesitate to ask.
Reading: Well done to all the members of 2AC who have already been a Reading Champion this academic year! To be in with a chance of winning, we ask that children read at home every night, even if it is only a couple of pages of their school book, and that parents/guardians/older siblings sign planners accordingly. As well as reading their school books, myself and Mrs Coote love to hear that children have been reading their own books – do let us know if your child has a particular favourite that we can discuss with them!
Book Bags: Please can you ensure that book bags are brought in every day, containing a planner, reading book and water bottle. All children who are in the new building are also required to bring a pair of pumps to wear inside. The children will change into their outdoor shoes at break times so as to minimise mess on the new carpets. Please ensure that your child therefore has a pair of pumps with them. These can be left in school overnight to avoid any issues with forgetting them each morning.
Class Blog: Towards the end of last term, the children were very excited to be shown how to access our class blog. This will be updated regularly to show what we have been getting up to in 2AC, as well as including digital copies of the newsletter. A link to the blog is shown below – why not check out it out and ask your child to explain what we have been getting up to?

Harvest Poems
11.10.16 After a week of hard work, 2AC have produced some AMAZING Harvest poems. Not only did they include adjectives in their writing, they also remembered to use adverbs and similes! In order to celebrate the writing produced, today’s Literacy lesson gave the children the chance to read out their poems to the whole class. Check out the photos below to see how they did.
Brain breaks
Every now and again, our brains get a little tired and we need to wake them up again. 2AC have really enjoyed learning the Pop See Ko brain break dance routine to re-energise themselves.
Click here to practice the routine at home!
Planting seeds
06.10.16 In Science today 2AC were learning how seeds grow. To help us in our learning we planted mustard seeds. Hopefully they will grow quickly!
Stay and Learn
04.10.16 Everyone in 2AC had a great time during Stay and Learn this week. We started off with some handwriting practice (practice makes perfect after all!). All the hard work is really starting to show as the handwriting books are looking really neat. Now the challenge lies with transferring the neat writing to our Writing and Maths books!
After handwriting, we looked at how we could describe Harvest/Autumn with our senses. The children were split into 4 groups (what can you see/hear/smell/touch?), with objects and pictures to provide help and inspiration. Mrs Coote and I were really impressed with the interesting noun phrases that were produced – well done 2AC!
A big thank you to the parents who joined us – I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
What does a plant need to grow?
2AC decided to investigate what plants need to grow. In order to do this, we had to plant some plants! Each plant was given a list of conditions:
- Water, warmth and light.
- No water.
- No light.
- No warmth.
We will check on the plants in a few weeks to see which ones survived.
Introducing… Super Ted!
Super Ted likes to sit in the classroom every day and spot all the super things that members of 2AC get up to. On a Friday afternoon, he then decides who’s house he wants to visit that weekend. Some children have already had a visit from Super Ted for activities such as Super Behaviour and Super Bravery. Who will go home with Super Ted next?
Look how smart we are!
Mr Cairns came and took a picture of 2AC in their new classroom. Look how smart everyone looks in their uniform!
